| Not too far from the camp site, about 28 miles south east, is the old mining town of Cerro Gordo. Nestled in the midst of the Inyo Mountains, Cerro Gordo was a busy and vital mining operation that helped revive Los Angeles in the late 1800's. The Owen's Dry lake bed is also nearby, about 5 miles south of Lone Pine. | |||||||||||||||||
| The camp site was on a spur trail off of the main Movie Trail. Named so because of the numerous Hollywood western movies that were filmmed here. In fact, scenes from the movie Gladiator was also shot at the Alabama Hills. The sky was crystal clear blue; if you look closely, you can spot the moon. At night, a remarkable star littered sky, as the whole galaxy can be seen. | |||||||||||||||||
| Gearing up to hit one of the numerous spur trails that traverses the Alabama Hills and leads into the Sequoia National Forest. The best time to visit the Alabama Hills is October and November, it is cold with snow fall in winter, hazy and hot in the summer. | |||||||||||||||||
